The DR2 Unisex Lab Coat was the first ever garment created by the Dr. James brand in 2005. It gets finds its inspiration from Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins, one of America's most recognised realists, who showcased his expression of the human figure through painting, sculpture and photography. One of Eakins more controversial pieces was his 1889 oil painting, 'The Agnew Clinic' in which he portrayed a partially nude woman observed by a roomful of male doctors. What is most interesting about the piece is that is it one of the earliest visual representations of doctors wearing white smocks. It was not long before this in 1875, that Eakin's painting 'The Gross Clinic,' arguably his most famous work ever, showed a similar portrayal but the doctors were wearing black smocks. Why this is so important is because it represents a very important and historical transition in the mid to late 1800s of modern medicine and how the doctor was perceived. It was around this period that sterilisation was discovered and the merging of science and medicine become popular.  Being a doctor was a formal practise and therefore wearing black, similar to clergy men was the appropriate attire at the time. A visit to a doctor often produced little to no results for the patient and was commonly seen as a last resort. Only scientists wore white and were perceived with a much higher respect than the doctor. The birth of the white lab coat represented a new era of modern medicine and the pursuit of the new doctor was a more noble profession than ever before.

All Dr. James garments are manufactured with our hardwearing industrial grade LABTEX fabric. It's versatile structure make it suitable for almost all lab, medical and industrial work environments. It's absorbent material and soft but durable finish, offers the user limited protection against non-chemical spills and dust to clothing underneath. LABTEX fabric is available in both 65/35 polycotton and 100% cotton. Please select the correct composition suitable when shopping our boutique collection.
